Homemade Kinetic Sand Valentines

If you are looking for a non-candy alternative Valentines for your kids to take to school then look no further.  Kinetic sand is the perfect sensory and creative play activity for toddlers and young kids.  It mimics the look and feel of wet sand without drying out.  Plus it can be molded into any shape.  Kinetic sand is super easy to make and guaranteed to be a hit with all their friends and classmates.

Supplies Needed

  • Sand  (tan sand from home improvement stores or white sand from craft stores)
  • Corn Starch
  • Dish Soap (clear or white)
  • Tea Tree Oil (for antibacterial properties)
  • Powdered Tempera Paint
  • Heart Shaped Containers
  • Plastic Favor Bags
  • Twine or Ribbon
  • Printable Tags

Recipe for Colored Kinetic Sand

  • 5 cups sand
  • 1.2 cups corn starch (approx. 1 cup + 3 tablespoons)
  • 2 teaspoons of powered tempera paint (add more to get desired color)
  • 1/2 teaspoon dish soap
  • 1 cup water (add more as needed)
  • 1 teaspoon Tea Tree Oil

 Directions

Mix the dry ingredients first then add in wet ingredients and mix until well blended.  There are more ways to coloring the sand too.  We like the tempera paint over anything else because it washes off little hands easier.  Yes your hands may change colors temporarily while playing.

What kid won’t enjoy receiving this for Valentine’s Day?  I know my boys would love to receive this and would play with it for hours.  This is something your kids can enjoy time and time again because it won’t dry out.  Plus the clean up is as simple as using a wet cloth or vacuum for the floor.

  1. Would be nice to include the printable tag for those who don’t have time to make one. If there is one I don’t see it. Cute idea, though!
