DIY Valentine’s Day Mailboxes

We are holiday junkies in our house.  Once the seasonal decor from one holiday comes down, the next goes up.  After my Christmas decorations were put away, I was ready to fill that void by setting out Valentine’s decorations.  Creating memories around each holiday is important in our house.  We do several traditions centered around Valentine’s Day including these cute DIY mailboxes. You can put love coupons, special treats, or anything that you want in the boxes. If you don’t have a Valentine’s Day tradition or would like to add one more then stick around for all the details below on creating your own mailboxes.

SUPPLIES

A couple years ago, I stumbled upon the idea of Valentine’s mailboxes for my boys.  As soon as I saw them, I knew I had to make each of them one.  Here is what you will need.

DIY INSTRUCTIONS

Start by spray painting the candleholders in your color of choice.  Once dry, it is time to adhere the mailboxes to the candleholders.  I experimented with several options before I landed on the one that worked.  The best result was obtained by using Liquid Nails.  You can find it at your local home improvement store like Lowe’s or Home Depot next to the paint section.  Let this dry for 24- 48 hours.  Then let creativity flow by decorating the outside of the mailboxes.  I used permanent vinyl and my Circut machine to personalize each of them.  The circuit library has thousands of options to choose from.  Down the rabbit hole I went.

WHAT TO PUT INSIDE

Now that you have these adorable mailboxes, what do you put inside?  We use ours for a daily countdown starting February 1st.  Yes I know, it seems like we have a countdown for every holiday.  But who’s counting?  The last couple of years, I included a piece of candy, a love coupon from Printabelle, and a ‘what I love about you’ heart.  The hearts were made out of cardstock paper and I wrote one thing that I love about them each day.  We then taped it to their bedroom door to display during the whole countdown.  Fills their little love buckets!

This year I plan to add 14 random acts of love to our tradition.  I found this idea from Holly Brooke Jones on her post called Valentine Countdown. I love that they are simple yet meaningful and can teach each of my boys how to show love outside the 14 days.   Excited to give this idea a try?  Comment below with what you will put in your mailboxes?
