Downtown Fort Wayne just got a major upgrade to the riverfront with the addition of Promenade Park. If you haven’t visited this yet, you need to go check this out. It totally transformed the look and feel of downtown. As our family walked around the park, it felt like we somewhere else. One of my boys even asked if we were staying here overnight at a hotel so we could come back tomorrow. I replied that it was right here where we lived and how awesome is that.
This four-acre park has so much to offer for the whole family including an interactive water display, awesome playground, amphitheater, and 560 foot treetop canopy trail offering amazing views of the city. There is so much to see and do at the new Promenade Park.
Doermer Kids’ Canal
Bring your swim suits and towels for this one or you might just regret it. Our boys wore their swim suits to the park and jumped in the moment that they saw it. The river feature with the rocks is so cool as it runs down hill to a stair step waterfall. It is only about 6 or 8 inches deep and very clean. There is also a splash pad nearby too. The boys loved it and didn’t want to leave. But once I pointed out the park on the other side of the river, they were ready to explore.
PNC Playground
I will admit, I have been a little green with envy at some of the new playgrounds that have went up around Indy lately. However, this definitely makes up for it! This is a must see for your kids. From the slides that run down from the treetop trail and the interactive musical area to the amazing spinning contraptions that can be loaded with kids, it won’t disappoint. There is even a shaded area for the adults to sit and watch. My only complaint is that there is steep hillside off one side of the playground straight down to a concrete sidewalk. It might need a guard rail or something to keep little kids from falling down it.
Let The Games Begin
Several games that look to be made of concrete are a permanent fixture here at the park. There are 3 Ping Pong Tables, 2 Cornhole Games, and 1 Foosball Table. The hospitality staff is on-site daily except holidays to provide equipment. We saw this area as we were leaving and we are totally planning to get our game on when we visit next time.
Treetop Canopy Trail
Walk along the trail and enjoy all the views of the city from every angle. It really is a picture perfect spot. We enjoyed watching the activities down on the water like the boat ride and all the kayaks going up and down the river.
Boat Tours
Meet Sweet Breeze! This canal boat gives an experience for all ages with 45-90 minutes tours on the river. Tickets are purchased online through Fort Wayne Outfitters ranging $5-$30 dollars a person. They also rent out the kayaks and canoes on the river.
Trubble Riverside Cafe & Tap
Trubble Brewery, local to Fort Wayne, is operating a counter service cafe offering snacks, sandwiches, salads, and of course beer and wine slushes. A little bit for everyone. It is open Wednesday through Sunday only.
Event Rental Opportunities
Several areas around the park can be rented out for a party or special occasion. The spaces available including the Park Foundation Pavilion (inside and out), Old National Bank Plaza, Sweetwater Band areas, and the infamous Wells Street Bridge. This bridge by the way is a perfect spot for family photography. All rental inquiries must call 260.427.6248 or visit Promenade Park website.
This is a must see for anyone that lives here in Fort Wayne but if you are from out of town then definitely add it to the list for your next visit. Even the family pet is welcome to join in on the fun. I foresee this park being utilized well into the Fall months with lots of outdoor entertainment. Check out the event calendar here for more details. So get out there and explore this beautiful new park!
