Any kid would love to stay up and welcome the New Year with a glow in the dark party! You might even be considered the cool mom. It’s the perfect party theme for passing the time until the ball drops. We incorporated hourly activities to keep the boys entertained. It worked out great because we all made it until midnight and had a blast doing it.
Some people think that having kids means the fun of going out on New Year’s Eve is all lost. Well, I can tell you that the fun isn’t all lost. It is just different. We started these hourly countdown bags a few years ago with the boys. The bags are filled with games and activities to do as a family. The last couple of years we got out the black lights and started having a glow in the dark party. Check out last year’s Blacklight New Year’s Eve Countdown Party by clicking on the link.
Countdown Bags
Gather some sort of bag or gift bag to label for every hour. I purchased black gift bags from Micheals and splattered them with fluorescent neon paint. Note to self, do not fling paint in your kitchen. In hindsight, I should of done this part in the garage. Then label each bag starting with your start time and ending at or just before midnight.
Hourly Activities
There are so many options to fill each bag from puzzles and games to party poppers and silly string. I have over 50 ideas listed on my previous post, New Year’s Eve Countdown Bags With Kids. This year, I wanted the activities to still glow in the dark but change it up a bit from last year. This was the line up.
6:00pm Watch New Movie Abominable
7:00pm Stack Glowing Plastic Cups (also good Nerf targets)
8:00pm Color Fuzzy Posters with Flourescent Markers and Crayons
9:00pm DIY Glowing Slime
10:00pm Laser Tag
11:00pm Glow in the Dark Puzzle
11:55pm Sparkling Grape Juice Toast with Glowing Chocolate Covered Strawberries, Silly String, and Party Poppers
Table Decorations
Glowing place settings are super cheap and a must do. You can buy a complete set of plates with cups and silverware from Amazon. I completed each place setting with a party hat, fun 2020 glasses, and neon beaded necklaces. The table was covered in glowing stars and confetti with a disco ball hung right above the middle. Is it ready yet? The boys were super excited and must of asked me a that same question a thousand times…maybe more.
Food
Of course the sweet treats had to glow in the dark too. Last year, I found neon sprinkles and powdered food coloring from an online store called Busy Bakers Supplies. I just used those sprinkles again to top my cookies, cake pops, strawberries, and cake. I made everything except the ice cream cake from Cold Stone Creamery. Last year, I also found light up cotton candy sticks on Amazon and reused them making cotton candy again. They gobble down that cotton candy as fast as I make it. Big hit with the kids!
We might just have to make the glow in the dark theme stick around for a couple more years. The boys love it and so do I. So hit me with some cool glow in the dark ideas in the comments. How do you celebrate on New Year’s Eve? Do you stay in or go out?
