I am so excited to finally share with you the bedroom makeover that we completed for our youngest boy. It was long overdue since he outgrew his toddle bed. I think I was holding on to the last bit of him being a baby for as long as I could. Like most little boys, he is into all things racing cars and automobiles. We must have a million matchbox and hot wheels cars. He could play for hours on playmats running the cars along the roads and this became my inspiration for his room.
Are you looking to makeover your toddlers bedroom or change up your preschoolers current room, then keep following along for all the details to recreate this room in your home.
Loft Bed
On a recent trip to IKEA, it was love at first sight when he saw the Kura loft bed. He was over the moon with the thought of having a big boy bed and even more that it was a bunk bed. We also picked up the IKEA HEMNES dresser too. Of course, my thoughts immediately went to planning all the details to his room. After many sessions on Pinterest, I came across this IKEA Kura bed without the side panels and loved the openness that it created. Initially, I wanted to paint it grey but by then it was already put together… actually several times over. My hubby is a trooper and reconfigured it 5 times to get it the way I envisioned. So, I opted to just use texture peel and stick wallpaper on the sides from Wayfair. Believe it or not, it was actually super easy to apply. Like a giant sticker!
Reading Nook
My favorite part of the whole room was this area under the bed that I turned into a reading nook. He loves books and having us read to him. Besides bedtime, he will often bring me a pile of books to read and snuggle. Under the bed, I created a cozy lounge space with a large cushion from Crate and Kids. I then piled on tons of pillows mostly from Ikea and target. The IKEA FUBBLA lamp light provided the perfect amount of light and FLISAT shelves to display some of his favorite books. To finish off the space, I added a grey faux fur rug, cotton rope basket, grey faux fur blanket, and IKEA LIVSAR string lights.
Things That Go Bedding
When researching just the right bedding, I came across the Things That Go quilt set from Pottery Barn Kids. The roads, cars, and trucks in the neutral tones matched my idea for the room perfectly. Over the corner of the bed, I draped a grey canopy and a dream catcher.
Wall Collage
One of the first places that I looked for unique pieces for the room was etsy. The car display shelf, personalized metal garage sign, wooden ‘vroom vroom’ word sign, and the ‘no speed limit’ sign worked together to make a great wall collage. Below the collage, I purchased a white cube storage organizer from Target with fabric bins.
Extra Details
All three of my boys would spend hours running cars along a road play mat. This black and ivory area rug for his room was a no brainer and how I picked the room theme. When I see him playing cars on the rug with his brothers, it brings my idea to life and my hearts melts.
I purchased this set of 3 Road Prints digital artwork from Etsy and printed them at a local copy & print store. The frames were inexpensive black KNOPPANG frames from IKEA.
The wooden letter L was purchased on amazon that I sprayed painted it black. Once dry, I used my circuit to add vinyl road markings and hot glued on a car. When he saw one of his favorite cars permanently glued to the letter, he was less than impressed! Guess me will have a million and 1 now!
Well, that’s a wrap! He loves him room and has showed it to all his family and friends via zoom. Oh 2020 has been quite the year, am I right? Now onto the next project, their bathroom. Which will be Disney Nautical themed. Keep a look out for progress!

Hi, beautiful space! Can you provide a recommendation for a mattress that will fit the bed?
Thank you!
Thanks! We just got the mattress from IKEA too. It is a children’s one and think it was twin size.
Do you by chance have the link for the floor pillow?
I think it was pottery barn. I will look.
How old is your son you put in this bed? Debating if it’s safe for my 4 year old
Yes, my son got the bed for his 4th birthday.
Hi! Do you mind sharing the paint color and also the part of the wall that’s striped. Did you do that part yourself or is it a wallpaper?
