Family Favorite
Growing up, I remember eating breakfast and opening up that foil packet of Pop Tarts. All the flavors were delicious like blueberry, brown sugar cinnamon, and Apple. However, my absolute favorite is strawberry! My boys now love strawberry too. And what’s better than a strawberry pop tart…a giant one! Think of it as a cross between a pot tart and a homemade pie. With a premade pie crust, strawberry filling, vanilla icing, and decorations, this dessert turned into an easy culinary masterpiece.
Easter Celebration
Imagine showing up at your Easter celebration with this giant decorated egg dessert. It will likely be the star of the show and delicious too. Your kids will want to get involved in making this yummy treat or maybe even decorating their own. This would also make a great idea from a birthday celebration or any other holiday too.
Items Needed To Make
Pie Crust: To make this easy, we used premade pie crusts from the store. They come in a package of two so you will need two boxes. You could also use a puffy pastry too if you like yours more soft and flaky.
Strawberry Jam: The filling is key and can really make or break your creation. We purchased ours from Country Kitchen SweetArt. Let me tell you it is delicious, and I can eat it straight from the bag. This store is local to us but you can also order online to have it shipped. Country Kitchen SweetArt is my go-to place for all things in the kitchen.
Powdered Sugar: To thicken and sweeten the frosting, we use powdered sugar. You can use granulated sugar too, but the consistency will be grainier.
Milk: Just a few drops of milk to the powdered sugar will get the perfect creamy texture.
Vanilla Extract: A little vanilla goes a long way. This step can be optional but will make the icing taste so much better.
Sprinkles and Edible Decorations: The skies the limit here! We purchased all our items from Country Kitchen SweetArt including various sprinkles, different colors of sparkle gel, and spring themed lay ons. I could spend hours in this store with all the options. Don’t forget that they ship too.
Optional Flavors
Strawberry not your favorite flavor? Don’t worry Country Kitchen SweetArt has more flavors to pick from including red raspberry, Lemon, Chocolate, Mango, Blueberry, Apple, Cherry, and more. You could even use Nutella or peanut butter. There is really no wrong way to do it.
Instructions
Place one pie crust on a lightly greased cookie sheet. Then overlapping in the middle add the second pie crust. Use a mini rolling pin to lightly roll the two crusts into one. No need to work about shape yet.
Brush egg wash around the outer edge of your pastry. I guesstimated the size and shape of my egg but you could print out a template to use. Then I filled in the inside with the strawberry filling. Try to keep the filling one inch from the outer edge that you determined.
On a floured surface, roll out two more crusts the same way and gently add to the top of the first. Use a pizza cutter and cut the outline of your egg. You can free hand this or use a printed template.
Use a fork to gently press the two crusts together all around the outer edge making a seal. Then use same fork or knife to poke holes in the top. Finally brush the top of the egg pastry with an egg wash.
Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown. Let cool for 10 minutes.
Spread vanilla icing across the top of the pop tart and arrange edible decorations and sprinkles to look like an Easter egg. Ta-Da!
Giant Pop Tart Ingredients and Supplies
Ingredients:
- 2 Boxes of store-bought pie crusts (comes 2 per box)
- 1-2 teaspoons of oil for greasing baking sheet or parchment paper
- 1- 1 1/2 cups premade strawberry filling
- 2 eggs + splash of milk (Egg Wash)
- Egg-shaped template (you can print one out or create your own)
- Edible decorations (sprinkles, icing, edible glitter, sparkle gel etc.)
- 1/4 cup of heavy cream
- 2 cups of powdered sugar
- 1 tsp of Vanilla Extract
Instructions:
- Preheat the Oven: Start by preheating your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure it’s nice and hot when you’re ready to bake.
- Prepare the crust: Lay out one of the pie crusts on a lightly greased large cookie sheet. Next lay out the second crust with some overlapping in the middle of the pan.
- Add the filling: Spread the premade strawberry filling in an egg-shape evenly over one of the crusts, leaving a small border around the edges to prevent the filling from oozing out during baking. Add egg wash to the border.
- Top it off: Place two more crusts in same way of overlapping in the middle slightly on a floured surface. Gently roll with a rolling pen to smooth out both crusts into one. Carefully place the second egg-shaped crust on top of the filling-covered one, aligning the edges as closely as possible. Press down gently around the edges to seal the two crusts together. Using your egg-shaped template or free handed, carefully cut out the egg shape from the crusts.
- Seal and decorate: Using a fork, crimp the edges of the giant pop tart to ensure a tight seal. This will help prevent any filling from leaking out while it bakes. Next with a fork or knife make holes or small cuts all around the pop tart. Then, lightly brush the top of the giant egg pop tart with an egg wash.
- Bake to perfection: Place it in the preheated oven and bake for approximately 20-25 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.
- Cool and decorate: Once the giant pop tart is finished baking, remove it from the oven and let it cool for 10 minutes on the baking sheet. Once it’s cool enough to handle, carefully transfer it to a serving platter or cutting board. Now it’s time to let your creativity shine with your edible decorations! Use icing, sprinkles, sparkle gel, layons, or any other edible decorations you like to embellish the surface of the pop tart. Let your imagination run wild!
- Serve and Enjoy: Slice it into generous portions and serve warm, with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream if desired.
With its impressive size, vibrant color, and irresistible flavor, this giant Easter egg strawberry pop tart is sure to wow your friends and family this holiday season. Whether you enjoy it for breakfast, brunch, or dessert, it’s bound to be a hit with everyone who tries it.
